Blood Monster by Neil Gaiman6/29/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Still, even the disquieting CGI people can't completely rob the fun from Gaiman and Avary's script, a wild, feral saga that expands upon the plot of the original "Beowulf" poem while at the same time subverting it, adding depth and shades of grey to both its heroes and villains in near-equal measure. 15 years later, the mo-cap human warriors, royalty, and half-human creatures in "Beowulf" have only grown more off-putting, which is too bad since the actors behind them seem to be having a ball, judging by their vigorous and spirited voice-work. It's plainly because Zemeckis' 2007 fantasy-adventure was part of his ill-conceived detour into mo-cap animation in the aughts, the results of which were three films (2004's "The Polar Express," "Beowulf," and "A Christmas Carol" in 2009) that are fundamentally hurt by their creepily life-like, yet still not convincing, CGI human characters. ![]()

Till we have faces ending6/29/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Lewis (1898-1963) was a British literary scholar and novelist. In the second part of the book, the narrator undergoes a change of mindset and understands that her initial accusation was tainted by her own failings and shortcomings, and that the gods are lovingly present in humans' lives. The story is set in the fictive kingdom of Glome, a primitive city-state whose people have occasional contact with civilized Hellenistic Greece. The first part of the book is written from the perspective of Psyche's older sister Orual, as an accusation against the gods. As a consequence, his retelling of the story is characterized by a highly developed character, the narrator, with the reader being drawn into her reasoning and her emotions. ![]() This story had haunted Lewis all his life, because he realized that some of the main characters' actions were illogical. They Asked for a Paper: Papers and AddressesĪ retelling of Cupid and Psyche, based on its telling in a chapter of The Golden Ass of Apuleius. ![]()

Midwinterblood book6/29/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Melancholy yet lovely music briefly separates the vignettes. Sedgwick's sparse prose is beautifully read with a haunting, dreamlike quality that lets listeners experience the horror, mystery, romance, and tragedy that abounds in the book. The audiobook is expertly narrated by British actor Julian Rhind-Tutt, whose hushed English voice is perfect for the recording. While each narrative could stand alone, combining them into one volume with the barest threads of connections (similar to Olive Kitteridge or Let the Great World Spin) makes the book noteworthy. This unusual book for teens (many of the stories feature adult characters only) goes backwards in time, beginning with a story that takes place in 2073. Common to all the stories is the Scandinavian island, Blessed a mysterious dragon orchid and Eric and Merle, who play different roles in each story. An archaeologist discovers the bones of an adult and a child in a Viking grave an allied airman is shot down and parachutes on to the island during the war an early 20th-century artist paints a. Once there, he meets Tor and Merle, and is soon settled in. Eric travels to a mysterious island that is said to be a magical place where people are living far beyond a normal lifespan. The first story, Midsummer Sun, is set in 2073. Gr 9 Up- Midwinterblood is comprised of seven vignettes, with settings ranging from the future to Viking times and a variety of characters, including vampires, ghosts, and humans. Told through seven different tales in reverse chronological order, Midwinterblood is a tale as old as time. ![]()

Deacon king kong book review6/29/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() If you’re a fan of James McBride, literary fiction, or are just searching for an atmospheric story to get lost in, you’ll want to pick up Deacon King Kong. The characters and their community are crystal clear in my mind and I didn’t want their story to end. All the characters eventually connect in surprising and clever ways to share a poignant and often hilarious tale of faith and change in the whirlwind of 1960s New York. What follows is the incredible story of the people affected by the shooting: from the victim and the witnesses to the local police officers and the Italian mob. Death is sure to find Sportcoat now that the top drug dealer in the Cause has been shot. ![]() Then comes the day that Sportcoat walks up to the flagpole where the young man called Deems is dealing drugs and shoots him with an old. Bad health has followed him his whole life, from South Carolina to New York, and yet the man continues to cheat death. The old man has been an alcoholic for years, nipping the homemade liquor called King Kong in the basement, but he’s quickly spiraling. Members of the Five Ends Baptist Church are concerned about their deacon, Sportcoat, after the death of his wife Hettie. His upcoming release Deacon King Kong is a stunning look at African American and Latinx residents of the Cause Houses in south Brooklyn during the 1960s. His characters are always fully realized and he allows readers to learn everything about them through subtle but powerful development. James McBride is an incredible storyteller. ![]()

Well, maybe she does more than just wonder! ![]() Some animals borrow a sled on a winter’s night, and the sled’s owner is left to wonder about their tracks in the morning. It does contain sound effects and onomatopoeia, but the story is completely told in the pictures. Red Sled by Lita Judge–Ok, maybe this isn’t really a wordless book. It’s the imaginative tale of a boy who finds an old film camera on the beach and can’t believe his eyes when he has the film developed. Here are a few of our favorite wordless books to get you started.įlotsam by David Wiesner–Wiesner is the author of multiple, wonderful wordless books, but Flotsam is my favorite. Wordless books are a fantastic resource to help your kids develop their own descriptive and story telling skills! Have your kids tell the story to you. Have you ever noticed that wordless books can be more challenging to “read” than other picture books? The pictures tell a complete story, but you (or your kids) have to come up with words to express it. ![]()
